HEALTH TECH & YOU: WHEN WILL WE STOP NEEDING DOCTORS?

Health

As well as our work in beauty and personal care, we work with an array of health and wellness brands from beautiful vitamins to proper painkillers. And so we can’t help but notice the relative slowness of the OTC industry to respond to the rise of digital and consumer-centricity.

We recently attended the Nicholas Hall European conference - where we delivered a workshop on creative brand stretch for OTC brands – but despite a focus on digital marketing and even a demonstration of AR and VR kit and applications, most OTC products themselves are still very 'pills and potions' oriented.

So it was great to visit the recent AXA PPP Health Tech & You exhibition at The Design Museum, where pioneering health technology was showcased.

The big themes that stood out were; personalised, consumer-centric systems and apps that put you in control of your own health; Telehealth that connects people to their health care practitioners directly; and, on the flip side, Charlie Brooker-esque health monitoring technology with a more sinister slant.

There were scores of examples, but here’s our best from the show:

POWER TO THE PEOPLE: CONSUMER HEALTH

Promt by Memrica app helps those with memory/dementia problems, providing a visual diary of images, maps and notes that create personalised reminders, linking content to context.

A fun way to do physio, MIRA Rehab gamifies rehabilitation by transforming physical therapy exercises into video games, using an external sensor to track and assess.

MyAsthma monitors potential asthma triggers, tracks your Peak Flow record, integrates your exercise info and sends pertinent information to your doctor.

CONNECTING YOU BETTER: TELEHEALTH

Affinity by Entia allows cancer patients to monitor their blood count from home and importantly, share in real-time with their doctor. Avoiding unnecessary trips to the hospital, and identifying the risk of infection earlier literally could be a lifesaver.

The WhatsApp for medical professionals and their patients Cupris Health is a simple and secure healthcare messaging service that enables the sharing of clinical images and test results and integrates with electronical medical records (EMR).

Mablecare is a mobile app for older adults under care or early stage dementia. It monitors everyday communications for signs of loneliness, depression, anxiety and safety using natural language processing, eye tracking and machine learning.

WE’RE WATCHING YOU: HEALTH MONITORING

TickerFit passive monitors you through your devices and lives on the cloud. It allows health care professionals to watch the wellbeing of their patients to prescribe lifestyle changes. Sounds good, right? But what if the data is also watched by health insurers and pharma companies? Not quite so empowering anymore…

Calling itself a next-generation patient data capture platform, uMotif captures your data from wearables and delivers your health overview in one handy interface that’s easy to understand and use. It’s also inherently mined for research purposes – meaning your data is not just for you.
