Here in the UK we spend more on beauty and personal care than the whole of Western Europe, having now overtaken the French to reach a whopping £4bn spend for the very first time, and continuing to grow steadily. But despite its size – and ongoing dominance by the big brand companies - it’s surprisingly intimate and very supportive of an increasing and exciting breed of female entrepreneurs and niche brands.

We had the fortune to meet Sarah Cross of CODE beauty at the Beauty Trends and Innovations conference a few weeks ago, where we heard her speak about her disruptive mascara brand, now stocked at Harvey Nichols and at Beautybay. And now one of our favourite beauty brands White Hot Hair, who we wrote about here and featured in Open Eye – Older, has just written a Q&A with her on their lovely blog - Friends of White Hot.

It’s a great read and a fantastic overview of how niche brands can really shake things up. Just like our favourite Charlotte Mensah, whose luxury afro haircare brand we worked on, is winning awards left right and centre and friend Gallinée is now appearing in Tatler, Cosmo, Stylist and tons of other fantastic press. And we just love turning up the volume back up on them too. Now that’s what we call beautiful.
