AN INSTITUTE OF IMAGINATION? ABSOLUTELY!
The Institute of Imagination’s moniker alone conjures images of a Hogwartsian academy, a school in Disc World or from the pages of a Roald Dahl novel, in short, a place where even the wildest of ideas from young minds can be nurtured into reality. And by the sound of things, it’s not actually too far off!
Seila, a DG+P Senior Designer, took her son on a recent weekend and was suitably enthused: “I had the luck to participate on a workshop organised by the IOI where the motto was imagine the future. There were lots of streams from sound making, animation, materials, virtual reality and more, but it was all about imagination with no boundaries. The patrons and advisors are top class like Thomas Heatherwick, who I can imagine will design the museum.”
That definitely piqued our interest, as here at DG+P, we love Thomas Heatherwick: his lecture Ingenuity, Transformation and Surprise was so good it still gets discussed in the studio months later. At the Festival itself, Seila and son explored augmented-reality app Blippar, made an animation using Stop Motion Studio, invented a device to help people with arthritis to button up shirts, an activity led by Fixperts whose ethos is for “everyone in the world to feel that they can fix stuff and solve problems”:Something that we discovered in abundance in our last Open Eye – the Older issue and it’s great to think that the IOI is inspiring children to do this from such a young age.
Looking a bit deeper, the IOI is a completely new concept, a one of a kind place with a model that describes itself as a laboratory, a gallery, science centre and a museum fused into one, powered by world-renowned experts, academics and philanthropists. And the goal of this non-profit, imagination culture-pot? To become a world-class London destination with a vision to empower children to discover their potential, celebrate their creativity, and learn to make the best of their talents. What’s not to love!
The IOI’s actual doors are not due to open until around 2019. In the meantime though you will be able to grow your little one's creativity at one of their forthcoming Imagination events, watch this space! We will be.
